Osteoporosis screening

Detect Bone Fragility Early

Did you know that osteoporosis is a silent disease often only discovered after a fracture? Through regular screening, you can take control of your bone health and reduce the risk of future injuries.

Detect bone fragility early – Osteoporosis screening with DXA and blood tests.

What is osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis means reduced bone density, which makes the skeleton weaker and more prone to fractures. Hips, wrists, and the spine are particularly at risk. Many people don’t notice the disease until they experience a fracture after a minor accident.

At Health Clinic Östermalm, we offer a comprehensive osteoporosis screening that includes:

  • DXA Scanning (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry): The most reliable method for measuring bone density in the hips and spine. The examination is quick, painless, and takes only a few minutes.
  • Blood Tests: To rule out secondary causes of bone fragility, such as vitamin D deficiency or hormonal imbalances.

Who should get tested?

Screening is particularly recommended for:

  • People over the age of 50
  • Women after menopause
  • Individuals with a history of fractures or long-term corticosteroid treatment
  • Those with risk factors such as low body weight, smoking, or a family history of osteoporosis

What is a DXA scan?

During the examination, you lie comfortably on a table while a low-dose X-ray measures bone density in specific areas such as the hips and spine. The results are presented as a T-score:

  • Normal: T-score > -1.0
  • Osteopenia (reduced bone density): T-score between -1.0 and -2.5
  • Osteoporosis: T-score ≤ -2.5

This information helps us assess your risk of fractures and the need for treatment.

Why should you also take blood tests?

Blood tests can provide valuable information about the underlying causes of bone fragility, such as deficiencies in essential nutrients (e.g., calcium and vitamin D), hormonal imbalances, or other medical conditions affecting the skeleton. By combining DXA scanning with blood tests, we can:

  • Identify nutrient deficiencies that may affect bone strength.
  • Detect hormonal changes, such as low levels of estrogen or testosterone, which can contribute to bone fragility.
  • Assess bone metabolism, helping us understand if your body is breaking down bone faster than it is building it.
