What is an MRI examination?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a medical imaging technique that uses a magnetic scanner (MRI scanner) for diagnostic purposes.
MRI creates images using magnetic fields and radio waves without any X-ray radiation, making it completely harmless.
This technology is used to detect diseases, map injuries, and monitor treatments with millimeter precision in nearly all human organs, such as tumors, inflammation, fractures, osteoarthritis, stroke, and changes in blood vessels and bones.

How does an MRI examination work?

MRI examinations are performed at radiology clinics. The images are first reviewed by a specialist doctor in radiology (radiologist). The specialist doctor then reviews the results, writes a summary, and provides recommendations. You go through your results with the specialist doctor. If necessary, a referral is sent for further management.
When undergoing an MRI examination, you lie on a table that is moved into a magnetic tunnel. You must lie still while the images are taken. A nurse operates the camera from an adjacent room, and you can talk to the nurse throughout the procedure via a microphone and speaker.
After the MRI examination, you can leave the clinic immediately.
A full-body MRI takes about 60 minutes.

Who is not suitable for MRI?

If you have electronic devices implanted in your body, such as a pacemaker, insulin pump, or cochlear implant.
If you have had surgery on your head or heart and have metal clips implanted instead of stitches after surgery.
If you have metal splinters in your eye or any other part of your body.
If you answered yes to any of the above, please let us know so that our doctors can review what alternatives are available.
Fixed dental fillings, dental implants, prosthetics, hip and knee replacements, as well as screws in arms and legs, are not obstacles to MRI examinations.

How do I prepare for the examination?

Mention in your health form if you have had previous radiology examinations. This allows our doctors to assess your condition as accurately as possible.

It is necessary to inform us if you are pregnant. MRI is generally not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy. In such cases, the examination may be postponed until after the baby is born.
It is important to mention if you suffer from claustrophobia or have general discomfort in confined spaces. In such cases, a discussion can be held with the responsible doctor about the possibility of prescribing a sedative to make the examination as comfortable as possible. If you believe you would be calmed by music, there is also, in some cases, the option to play music during the examination for your comfort.
Be sure to leave all forms of jewelry and clothing containing metal at home before coming to the examination.

PSA test for men

For a full-body MRI, men need to complete a PSA test, which is taken via a blood sample. A specialist doctor determines who needs a PSA test before the examination.
PSA stands for prostate-specific antigen, and the test measures the amount of prostate-specific antigen in the blood. The test may indicate a tumor change, but the most common reason for elevated levels is benign conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (prostate enlargement), urinary tract infection, and acute/chronic prostatitis. By combining a PSA test with an MRI examination, the doctor gains a more accurate understanding of any signs of cancer in the prostate gland.
No preparation is needed for the PSA blood test. When you arrive at the lab/clinic, take a number and wait until your number is called. You only need to show ID to the nurse before the test so they know which blood test to take.
